Can Claude generate or edit images or is it purely text-based?

Claude is a text-based AI model and cannot generate images on its own. It does not have built-in image generation capabilities like DALL-E inside ChatGPT or Gemini's image generation feature. Claude's strengths are in reading, writing, reasoning, coding, and analysis.

However, Claude can read and analyze images that you upload to it. You can paste or attach a photo, diagram, screenshot, or chart and ask Claude to describe it, extract text from it, explain what is happening, or answer questions about it. This vision capability is available in both the claude.ai interface and via the API.

If you need image generation as part of a Claude-powered workflow, the common approach is to use Claude to write a detailed, high-quality image prompt based on your description, then feed that prompt into a dedicated image generator like Midjourney, DALL-E 3, or Stable Diffusion. Claude is genuinely excellent at writing descriptive prompts that get great results from image generators.

There are also developer integrations where Claude is connected to image generation tools via function calling in the API. You can build an application where Claude decides when to generate an image and calls an external image API automatically. This lets you create multimodal apps even though Claude itself does not generate images natively.
