I feel like I am not getting the most out of Claude. What are the best practices for writing prompts that get really good responses?

The single biggest improvement you can make is being specific. Instead of saying write a blog post about AI, say write a 600-word blog post about how small business owners can use AI tools to save time on admin tasks, in a friendly and practical tone aimed at non-technical readers. The more context you give about audience, tone, length, and purpose, the closer the first draft will be to what you actually want.

Give Claude a role when it helps. Starting with you are an experienced Python developer reviewing junior code or you are a copywriter specializing in SaaS product launches puts Claude in the right frame of mind before it even reads your actual request. This works especially well for technical and creative tasks.

Use iterative refinement rather than trying to write the perfect prompt upfront. Ask Claude for a draft, then follow up with make it shorter, add a section on pricing, or change the tone to be more urgent. Claude is very good at incremental edits and remembers the full context of the conversation, so you can sculpt the output over several exchanges rather than getting it perfect in one shot.
